Every Day Carry
The term “everyday carry” refers to stuff you always bring with you when you go out, and for most people starts and ends with phone and house keys. Historically, it has changed a lot (hats being an obvious example, a simple knife was also very popular throughout most of history). Being a full-fledged weirdo, I carry a lot more than people usually think to pack, to the point where most people I interact with seem to think I have a sort of hammerspace in my bag/pockets. To dash those unfounded beliefs (and maybe be an inspiration to some), here’s an attempt to list all the shit in my pockets.
First off, historically, people changed shirts/socks/underwear etc, but wore more or less the same outer layer - get 20 shirts for cheap and invest in a really good jacket, since it’s the jacket people will be looking at. Same here - except unfortunately the jacket was not much of an investment, and I’m suffering the consequences of that.
Hat
Ah, yes, the noble hat, a headwear no gentleman/lady/bastard/weirdo/linux user can do without. It did originally start as a joke (and/or me trying out fashions of yore to see what works), but after it worked out shockingly well through sunglares and rainy days, I decided to do like we used to and wear a hat outside (also it looks cool af).
There were multiple iterations to this. The original was a cowhide cowboy hat from Australia, which, while fancy and authentic, was too precious to just wear outside every day - what if I forgot it?! I tried out a tophat and a crush hat from the carnival store (a crush hat is essentially a tophat, with a neat contraption on the inside which enables it to be folded flat when not needed, and then extended without a wrinkle afterwards), however both looked terrible on account of me not being an oil baron. A cowboy hat from the same was a much better fit (and much more comfortable), but was egregiously over-the-top, so I now keep it only for weird mods that I want to try out before I deface one of the others. And finally, my current beau, a felt cowboy hat, with a minor mod for a cord for stormy weather (or to hook it up when people are audacious enough not to have a hat stand), holding its own against rain, and folding comfortably under the arm when not needed. I am considering adding ventilation holes so it’s more bearable in summer, but haven’t yet figured out a way to do it that won’t ruin the vibe and/or material.
In addition, I have a chaperon that I originally made for an adeptus mechanicus cosplay that ended so well that I am considering remaking it for regular wear. I also have plans to sew an ushanka, for when the weather is too cold even for my facial hair.
Cane
Ah, my dear Midnight. Handmade walking cane, a meter long, lacquered black. The body is a 2cm metal pipe with two coupling nuts hammered in at both ends as attachment points, the lower one blocked with an appropriately cut screw. I did make an estoc to hide there instead, though I don’t usually keep it there - no need to get that mafia about it. Leather grip, braided in paracord, with a gentle red vein running through it. The top was supposed to be an 8ball for an extra Midnight Crew look, but I still haven’t found one, so it’s still just a plastic ball I spray-painted appropriately.
Shoes
Classic pair of old converses with rainbow lacing (that I haven’t gotten around to adding yet). I am still weirdly proud of them, because it is astonishingly bad to find cool and durable shoes in my size.
In more extreme weather, I do also have a pair of sports boots that are falling apart after just a year of use. I have long been on the lookout for good military boots, however, on account of my feet being a bit fucked (clinical term), the standard military design really does not work well on me. I’m almost considering making them myself as well - though that has its own set of complications that will be a bit harder to circumvent.
On the weirder side, I am still a few weirdly specific hinges away from wearable anthropomorphic legs for that extra weirdness factor.
Cloak
Cheap black carnival cloak that looks about right and is kind of waterproof but not really. Will post more when I remake it into something halfway decent.
Denim jacket
Got it at a second-hand store at the beginning of the plague, and it is now riddled with pockets and patches and holes and embroidery (specifically, Mollymauk’s tattoos) (also some copper couching which has not held well). I also added two loops to carry it as a backpack during summer when it’s too warm even for its hole-ridden fabric. I am considering remaking it from scratch: it has served me well, but it was not made to last this long or be used this much, and I have fancy weird ideas on what to incorporate into a new one.
In the jacket we have:
- left pocket: pocket knife
- right pocket: keys and pocket watch
- left upper pocket: phone (small one, used as music player)
- right upper pocket: napkin and basic lockpicks
- right inner pocket (big!): smartphone (family insisted - I’m considering switching to a motorola razr v3), mask, a5 pocket notebook + pen (ballpoint replacement cartridge - uncomfortable to use but really small), headphones (when they’re not on my neck)
- right upper inner pocket: sunglasses, regular glasses
- right upper inner pocket #2 (in case you can’t tell, I sew): backup pen (regular ballpoint)
- back pockets, from left to right: backup napkin, candy, ikea pencils (I forgot them there last time I went to ikea two years ago), and emergency diy snake whip
Pants
This one is entirely self-made. As a teen, I had always wanted more punk shit in my life, like waist chains or tripp pants, and as an adult, I have always wanted clothes that don’t fucking rip apart after three months of wear. Those esires culminated in me ripping apart an old ikea couch I found on the sidewalk one evening, and making a pair of pants from the scraps (plus a notebook jacket, see below for that). It’s got extra fabric gathered at the back (in case I need to resize them later on), and red stitches around the plethora of (mostly decorative) pockets for that extra trippy look.
- diy military webbing braces (attached with carabiners) - can also be worn down for a punkier look
- detachable pockets, worn on the belt (really easy to make and very useful and versatile)
- big keyring (12cm diameter) (~5in) (.3 cubits) on the right hip, with five rings (when I’m not wearing them), a ball bearing (an actual ball bearing, not just bearing balls), two (regular) keyrings, two bolts, and three chains
- attaching to a carabiner at the back, attaching to
- 2m black chain (aka ‘emergency leash’), attaching to
- dope-ass butch carabiners (on the left hip)
Bag
Ho boy here goes the hail mary. I was used to carrying around a school bag (and later postman bag) with a notebook, drawing implements, and the odd knickknack in my teenage years, and found that to be a useful habit in general. Unfortunately, most commercially available bags suffered from the usual shitty fabric, design, and lack of pockets that is to be expected, until I eventually caved in and made my own.
It’s made from canvas cloth, found on the street as tradition dictates (I believe it used to be a curtain?), and has a removable, resizable webbing strap (which has done wonders for the holes on the shoulders of my jacket). It required some clever warping to sew it right-side-out, which unfortunately makes it really hard to draw a schematic for it. It is white and suffering from a lack of pins, as those tend to damage the fabric over time. I am considering sewing an extra denim patch onto it just for those, but it’s hard to coordinate with the front pockets and to figure out how to make sure the pins don’t actually damage the fabric underneath.
Flap:
- 1st pocket: two (ballpoint) pens and an ikea pencil (for borrowing), sharpie (stanley, really smol), washi tape (for notebook), two spools of thread (regular white and durable black), tiny tin box for loose threads (aka ‘garbage’), scissors+nail clipper+safety pin on a keyring (foldable scissors, safety pin for phones etc), another keyring with an usb stick (live arch linux install, for the travel laptop) and mini screwdrivers for glasses repairs, tape measure, calipers (?), thin metal file and metal rod (both also useful to tighten knots) (or ya know, combine with cordage from ikea baggie for an improvised garotte)
- 2nd pocket: backup pocket knife, precision pocket knife (cigar pocket knife, I added a clip point and pushed back the bevel), foldable camping fork, ear plugs
- 3rd pocket: carabiner with 2x reusable cable ties + emergency choker/grip/belt/webbing thingie + flash light (small but usb-chargeable, so no need for much capacity), usb stick (32gb, fat32 formatted), box with 2x lighters (usually one, but I had just found another one) + cigarettes (I don’t smoke btw) + hot glue stick + pipette (for fountain pen maintenance) + makeup brush
Side pockets:
- left (aka front): 2x pocket multitools (small, mainly used for the pliers)
- right (aka back): nylon trash bag (in case it rains), water spritzer
Inside, front pocket (with the zipper):
- plumber wrench (yeah we starting off great)
- screwdrivers, four bits (small and large philips and flathead - would have to take a picture to describe the thingamajig, but I got it at a store and am still modding it around)
- precision screwdriver with 9 bits (kept the standard ones, mainly used for philips to disassemble old stuff) - planning to transition to a set of five long double-sided bits, but that would require a mod to the other screwdriver that requires welding
- usb power adapter + usb cable (micro, because I’m not an animal) + powerbank
- ikea baggie: aforementioned double-sided bits, plus a lens, multiple cords of paracord & off-brand rope/cordage, twine, and some cable
- (opt) extra pocket (belt-attachable) with two soy crackers (emergency food)
- flat roll of duct tape
- plastic straw
Middle pocket:
- random shit I’ve picked up on the street, currently including a button, chewing gum, and two can tabs
Innermost pocket (the big one!):
- notebook (see below)
- (opt) tote or ikea bag for extra inventory space
- (opt) travel laptop + charging cable
- (opt) coffee thermos or soft water bottle (with cola) (blood pressure stuff, ya kno')
- wallet, including the usual but also: fresnel lens, mirror, worn-out frank to toss if needed, and a condom (I should probably move it, they tend to wear down in wallets)
- small plastic makeup can (black clown makeup, since I pretty much only do skull makeup)
- small tin can of needles+leftover threads+glasses screws+caffeine pill (got it from a friend, still haven’t packed it away - and it also works as a smell pouch!)
- pouch of ball bearings (100) and antique copper coins (5cp)
- (opt) pouch of roasted sunflower seeds (tasty snack)
Notebook
At this point, you will surely be shocked to find out that I bound my notebook myself as well. It features even more pockets and weird gazebos, and some neat bookbinding tricks that you probably haven’t seen before.
General structure:
- A5 notebook
- A5 means the individual pages are A4 (folded in two, bound at the middle). In addition, at the front, I have two A3 pages that I managed to fit in with some creative folding
- one of those being a set of maps: railroad plan of the state, map of the city I live in and the next big city (where I usually hang out), and a city transit map of the latter
- experimentally, a single B1 page folded up (not A1 because I messed up the measurements - had to cut it to size manually from a roll of packing paper)
- 6 sets of 8 pages (so 48 total), including a diary with a fancier binding to enable switching it out when it fills up
- 2 sets (16p) of leuchtturm dotted paper (grafted), because dotted paper is useful
- double-page spread of a qr code to my homepage plus additional links on the opposite side
- paper pocket on the back cover (stickers and a name tag)
- colored threads attached to back cover, useful as bookmarks
Jacket:
- made from same denim as the pants, with a fancy button-and-cord lock, a sewn flap at the back (so I can refit it in case I change notebooks) (it also doubles as a pocket), and extra pockets on the side (the inside flaps also used as pockets)
- central flap contains a black .6mm leuchtturn mechanical pencil
- bottom pocket on the side contains a fine-nibbed black kaweco al-sport (probably the most expensive thing I carry lol, though it’s worth it considering how much I use it and the quality of use), with a converter of india ink. It occasionally gets clogged - press it on a hard surface until the tines (the two metal parts of a fountain pen nib) separate, and clean out with a receipt or similar (regular paper is too thick)
- upper pocket contains an eraser wrapped in black duct tape, because I have an aesthetic to keep and the black eraser was too rough for my taste
- last page (QR code spread) has a black metal ruler (the transparent plastic ones worked better tbh)
Additional contents:
- city maps (front jacket flap): the built-in spread is meant to replace those, I’m keeping them around until I’m certain it works out (and until I finally get around to transfering all my notes)
- accordion calendar (with the maps), each month is about 8x17cm (you don’t need much space for general notes)
- rip-off papers (before first page): A4 sheet folded down to A8 with the folds almost cut through. I can easily tear off visit-card-sized sheets to write people notes or contact information.
- I intend to pre-print one with some basic contacts and use it as visit cards, haven’t gotten around to designing that either
- 2x free A4 pages (before first page), in case someone “needs something to write on” (combined with pen or pencil from first pocket of front flap)
- one of the latter spreads in the notebook is covered in homophobic/transphobic/racist/etc stickers that I removed from lampposts and started collecting at some point
- sheet of star stickers (in above spread), for when people do a really good job and deserve a reward
- the occasional bottle label or candy wrapping (in above spread) that I had fidgeted with and decided looked nice enough to keep
